“He aupuni palapala ko’u”: progressive education, philosophy and the pedagogy of the lāhui hawaiʻi

Given at the ʻEleu conference in February 2024, this presentation, geared towards Native Hawaiian educators and those within the HCBE space, explored the intersections of Western Progressive Education philosophies and Kanaka Hawaiʻi pedagogies and learning methodologies. I make the case here that progressive education is the most natural model for education for both Kanaka and non-Kanaka learners.

It also advocates for the role of the school librarian in a child’s learning.
